Project Proposal
For my project I would like to be a part of the HHS homepage redesign. I could contribute to this by making the site more colorful and adding better info so that it is more attractive to other students. The point of the website is so that students will use it and if I can maybe add information to it that people actually want to see then we can reach that goal.
Reflection on My Yahoo, Google Reader and Google Docs
I found that My Yahoo was the most helpful of all three of the programs listed above. The best thing to do when looking up information on My Yahoo is to enter your subject in a few different ways. I did vet medicine so in the search engine I put, veterinary medicine, zoology, animal science and veterinarians. I felt that putting in a variety of searchs gave me alot more infomation and kept me open to different facts about my subject. I also found it helpful that when i got a new article I got daily info on it through the RSS feeds in my mail box. For Google Reader I used the same strategy and was able to find good information under my subject. Google Docs and Spreadsheets was different from My Yahoo and Google Reader because it mainly delt with organizing the documents and sending it to others rather then finding the information on the internet. I found that it was helpful because i could view my documents in a different way and write about them in summary. I feel like all of these programs were in a way like making an outline for a paper because it helps the viewer organize his or her subject in a way that you can do on paper so easily. Plus it is fast and easy to use.
If I were to use any of these tools in the future it would definitly be my yahoo. I would take all the other stuff off of my site and put in a new subject. I feel like My Yahoo could even be helpful on a research paper to talk about what kind of research is going on with in my subject. Also if somethin new happens it makes me more aware of it rather then having to research different sites everyday. I don’t think i would use google reader ever again because i didn’t like the way the program worked and the way the information was organized.
Personal Research Portal
One thing I found diffucult about this process was that some of the websites that i found did not have alot of information on them to help me. Also it was hard choosing between which websites were better then others. THe sites i found most interesting were the different college sites that have different veterinary programs. I found these sites worthwile because they spoke about programs they offer in colleges and i will be attending college next fall. It was also interesting to see the differences of the programs in the seperate colleges.
Harrison High School Site
I think that all the categories they have on the site are good where they are and should not be moved. I think that a section about the students should be added such as pictures of eachs tudent or even be able to look at your personal schedule and classes online. I could make it easier to present these sections by putting them in their own section called student. And you can oragnize this section into subsections called, Student ID or Personal Student Schedule.
Wikipedia
From reading through and learning about the internet safety precautions from the wikipedia I found a few things very interesting. Such as some of the cautions that are taken in other countries. I think it is amazing that some coutries will take such extreme punishment just for visiting the wrong or forbidden type of website. Such as if a site that is not supposed to be visited is looked at a person can actually be sent to prison for it. I also saw that our country is one of the least strict ones because sites are not blocked as strictly and the actions that are taken are not nearly as severe. This lesson gave me a great understanding of internet caution.
Animal Blog Summary
This blog speaks about a person who had various experiences with animals in her lifetime. She had first worked as an animal conrtol officer and had responded to a case about a bdaly injured dog that was trapped inside of a gutter. When they had rescued this dog the veterinarian had mentioned that if she could not pay the bill for the dog the vet could support or care for the dog in ways it needed to be. So she had decided to pay for the dog’s bill. In the end the owner of the dog had come to find her dog and happily pay for the bill and thank her for saving the dog. This made the animal control officer deligthed. As time went by she had made better friends with this doctor as more and more patients had come into the veterinary hospital. She had also learned to stay away from certain doctors that seemed to perform weird procedure around the female assistants. This lady had also been interested in how dogs get “stuck together” when they are mating. After a 30-minute instruction filled with disgrams she still did not hav any more knowledge then she did before.
I felt like this site was good because it talks about an experience of a person with animals and how they enjoyed parts of it and how some parts made them upset. If somone wants to hear about an experience working with animals and the effect it had on them then they should definitely read this blog.
Other Blog Summary
While i was looking through other students blog i came across an entry that was about pure volume.com, a site that i had added to my blog at the beginning. The writer basically spoke about how the site is able to let music fans listen to some of their favorite bands and songs. They also give an opinion on band of the week which also helps make it easier when it comes to finding a band you like. It also tells the reader that each band has its own page and certain list of songs
What i know and what i dont
In general I’m preety good with computer and i fixed a few of my own numerous times so I’m preety good with the techincal stuff. Although one thing I do want to learn is how websites are made and how the whole process works
